In fact, on the day I was born, Sunday morning, there was a choir singing in the hospital chapel. Music was one of my earliest experiences in life.

What differs you and your sound from other upcoming artists in the music industry?

My ears are naturally drawn to the sounds of the 60s and 70s. I love the rawness and unpredictability of old recording techniques and live playing. I like to bring this expressiveness and mold it into today’s sound.

Your latest release ‘Moving Up’ is out now. Can you please describe the creative process and explain the meaning behind the single?

Moving Up is an aspirational song which expresses the desire to achieve and to succeed without being deterred from self-sabotage and procrastination. I wrote the song to a simple clapping idea which formed the base that inspired rhythmic lyrics and percussive elements.

Everyone experiences good days and bad days, as a musician, when you have a bad day, what motivates you to keep moving and look ahead to the future?

I find when having a bad day that preoccupying yourself with a creative outlet is a great way of connecting and finding comfort. Also, accepting that sometimes it’s okay not to do anything.

In your own opinion, what is the most meaningful song you wrote? What makes you say that one?

Every time I write a new song, I fall in love with it and spend most of the day thinking about the lyrics, melody lines and arrangements. This can go on for days weeks and months sometimes, so my current most meaningful song would have to be Moving Up.

Throughout your musical career, have you experienced any ‘wow’ moments? Those moments that you stop to reflect and can’t believe you are where you are?

An incredible moment was when I performed as opening act for Debbie Harry (Blondie) at an exclusive fashion concert in Paris. Another crazy moment was playing to a huge crowd in Trafalgar Square during the London Olympics.

What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

Persistence and patience!

What does the foreseeable future hold for you as an artist?

I have many singles lined up to be released. Currently, I am also working on writing and producing projects for film and television.

Did you learn any new skills during lockdown?

The lockdown gave me the opportunity to refine my musical skills and to become disciplined. During this time, I have written, performed and produced a new EP in my room which I plan to release next year. I also did lots of Mediterranean cooking, which I am really good at now.

‘Moving Up’ is available now via all major platforms.

Connect with Guy Ivory

Instagram | Facebook | SoundCloud

Credits: Produced by Beau Blaise | All photos by Nadia Correia

What inspired you to begin a career in music?
